North Carolina drivers cannot drive without a valid vehicle registration. Drivers have the option to complete the North Carolina car registration process online, by mail or in person depending on their circumstances. Vehicle owners in the state can renew their vehicle registration 60 days before the registration expires. Most drivers receive a courtesy notice in the mail. However, any driver who misses the deadline to renew a registration will have to pay late fees in addition to the registration renewal fee.
